In the days before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, lone-wolf soldier and boxing champion "Prew" Prewitt (Montgomery Clift) defies orders at an Army barracks in Hawaii by refusing to box and choosing to play the bugle instead, enduring grueling punishments from hard-hearted Capt. Holmes (Philip Ober). Meanwhile, gruff but fair Sgt. Warden (Burt Lancaster) risks everything in a clandestine affair with the captain's mistreated wife, Karen Holmes (Deborah Kerr). Prewitt's loyal friend Maggio (Frank Sinatra) tries to help amid his own troubles, but their intertwined lives shatter when the devastating assault strikes.
