Earth, in the future, sends Rumata as a spy to a distant planet, to observe and document a civilization stuck in something resembling the Middle Ages. Rumata's job is to develop a report on experimental history, but never to intervene in the affairs of the people or alter their development. But can any man, particularly one armed with the technological advances of millennia, stay neutral in a cruel and violent world?
