Ernest Cole, a South African photographer, was the first to reveal the brutal realities of apartheid to the world. At just 27, his groundbreaking book, House of Bondage, published in 1967, forced him into exile in New York and Europe, where he spent the rest of his life feeling lost and out of place.
Raoul Peck captures Cole's struggles, his artistic turmoil, and his ongoing frustration with the Western world's silence or complicity regarding the atrocities of the apartheid regime. Additionally, Peck shares the story of how, in 2017, 60,000 negatives of Cole's work were found in a Swedish bank vault.
