Right from the start, I have to say that the tone, atmosphere, and depiction of 1940s Montreal threw me off. But that feeling quickly passed. Forcier grabs you right away and pulls you into his unflinchingly caustic vision. His world doesn't allow any censorship and gleefully smashes taboos left and right. It whirls from incest to the stigma of a gay priest, from a child's love to prostitution, from opera to murder. The movie plunges headlong into the depths of the soul and desperate love. It's almost Brechtian. Pleasures, feasts, legs akimbo, missed connections, birth and death. A portrait of the joys and tragedies of everyday love. A surprising film you have to see. I missed it in theaters in 2016, so I was glad to finally watch it today thanks to the Grande Bibliothèque.

This Quebecois movie was featured in our local film club. The cast includes many well-known actors. Set in the 1940s during WWII conscription, erotic dreams were apparently common back then. The disabled sister comes across as disturbingly possessive. It's a film about love, drama, and surreal dreaminess. The pacing drags at times during this period piece. I loved seeing the vintage vehicles from that bygone era.

A touching story of a son's love, constrained by life's challenges.

This is a historical movie set in the 1950s with a unique and original storyline. I gave it a 7 out of 10 for its originality. However, I think they included too many dramatic elements.

I can't enjoy a movie that lacks substance, despite having a great cast of actors, because the script is so ridiculous.

This movie has a lot of great ideas, brought to life by some of our favorite actors from Quebec. However, I found myself getting bored. There are several interesting scenes, but they don't seem to fit together well. The main character, played by Juliette Gosselin, is portrayed in an exaggerated and unconvincing way. We don't feel moved or unsettled by the incestuous relationship between her character and her brother. The visuals are stunning, but there's a jarring disconnect between the well-recreated 1940s atmosphere and the modern language used at times.

I love films like this that are out of the ordinary and stray from the beaten path. The acting is top-notch, with Céline Bonnier delivering an outstanding performance.

I have immense respect for Forcier's filmmaking. I genuinely enjoyed most of his movies: By the Light of the Moon, The Countess of Baton Rouge, I Remember, etc. Always inventive and refreshing. Forcier ventures off the beaten path and it's a breath of fresh air. But this time, sadly, I must admit I was disappointed. Perhaps my expectations were too high, or I was too eager to immerse myself back into his world. The acting overall was unconvincing, with a few exceptions like Céline Bonnier, who was as sharp as ever. The film starts off wonderfully, I wanted to dive right in, but then it fizzles out and I ended up feeling bored. The initial premise is once again original, but it seems that this time, it didn't win me over, unfortunately.

Fantastic film - I really enjoyed the screenplay and the performances, particularly by the young lead actor. It's one of André Forcier's finest works. The director's signature dreamlike and mythological style runs through the historical storyline, which shifts between satire and drama. A thoroughly entertaining cinematic experience!

I enjoyed it from start to finish, never even glancing at the clock. The film seamlessly balanced humor and drama, with just the right amount of implausibility to keep me engaged without losing credibility. It was absolutely wonderful! At one point, the characters toasted with port wine, and I found myself joining them from the comfort of my own home, feeling as if I were right there with them.

I'd say this is his best film yet. It takes us back to 1940s Montreal, seen through the critical yet humorous lens of a director who's never lost his childlike wonder. Such a poetic vision! I'm a huge fan of André Forcier.

Forcier's best work since Moonlight. He has a unique cinematic style that he employs masterfully here. The actors and actresses deliver authentic performances, following the director's poetic vision. And Juliette Gosselin's breasts will be singing Souchon's song for years to come.

A wild love story set during World War II. Colorful, eccentric characters. A plethora of actors and actresses in minor supporting roles, with talented and attractive young actors and actresses in the lead roles. A story that seems hard to believe, but is certainly possible. A great film!!

What a joke! Totally fake and poorly acted. It's like watching a high school play. The storyline is weak and the directing is bland. The experienced actors aren't showcased at all. Clearly, I didn't enjoy it and even regretted seeing this movie. The only laughs come from how ridiculous and far-fetched it is. Quebec is capable of much better than this.

The movie features a string of scenes that switch between humor and passionate romance. It's an unsettling film at times, with its burlesque and exaggerated style, and the intimate camera work makes you feel like you're watching a play rather than a movie. Definitely a unique style!

I really enjoyed this film for a number of reasons: 1) The story is set in the 1940s and features a great deal of realism along with stunning dreamlike imagery. 2) The actors and actresses are expertly guided by the director. Despite many of them being fresh faces, they all deliver outstanding performances in their roles. 3) The storyline is far from ordinary and is very well developed, with unexpected plot twists that keep you guessing. This movie strongly resembles the classic Italian films from the same era.

This is one of the best movies I've watched over the past few months. It takes a while to get going, leaving you wondering where the director is headed with the story. But once it kicks into gear, the film completely enchants you. The gags are often hilarious, leaving you utterly charmed as you walk out of the theater. The 1940s ambiance has been brilliantly captured despite the limited budget. I had no idea Mr. Forcier possessed such immense talent.

This was a terrible film that completely bored me. I suffered through staying until the end. The directing was weak and the acting felt fake - nothing about it was believable at all. I couldn't tell where the director was trying to take the story or what his true intentions were. It was a total waste of my time. Next time there's a movie by Forcier, I'll just wait for it to come on TV.

    lynda@  20.9.2016 age: 50+ 2 reviews

For a film from Quebec, it's not too bad. The period details like costumes, hairstyles and setting are well done. However, the rather over-the-top, theatrical performances by Patrick Drolet and Rémy Girard give it a bit of an amateurish feel.

A satirical comedy reminiscent of the good old days, with a love story and a complicated situation to uncover. The film features some highly improbable scenes, like the battle between the father and son that leaves one of them embedded in a wall. It's a wonderfully crazy, almost psychotic story. I highly recommend it!

A Quebec that's a caricature of its long-lost past, a story with unexpected twists, a wonderful journey back in time, humor that's a bit crude at times, but oh what joy and delight! Well done, Mr. Forcier!

Incredibly bleak; it's not the incestuous attraction that's shocking, it's kind of amusing up to a point, but all these unsettling scenes, the incest with Roy Dupuis, the normalization of murder, the scene where you're left wondering if she'll kill her baby. Ultimately, there's absolutely nothing funny about this movie; it leaves everyone feeling disturbed. You have to wonder what frame of mind Mr. Forcier was in when he wrote this screenplay. The 8 rating is completely overblown... We felt like walking out before the end.

Another great film by Forcier. This lengthy fantasy takes place in the 1940s. As usual with this director, the movie features visual gags, dialogues that are often far from reality, and acting with a strong dose of irony. The colors, music, and dialogues all contribute to transporting the viewer to another world. The satire of "our people" is particularly well done...

Montreal, 1940. A disturbing love story between a brother and his twin sister. Despite being a low-budget film, which is evident, it only enhances the enjoyment it brings. The actors deliver top-notch performances, with many talented actors in minor roles (Pierre Verville stands out as particularly effective). The inventive screenplay, lively dialogues, and memorable scenes (like the one with workers carrying heavy bags) make this film a pure delight.

What a creative and unique movie, so different from the usual fare! I was unfamiliar with André Forcier's work, and despite closely following the media coverage surrounding this film, I really had no idea what to expect in terms of its tone. What a pleasant surprise it turned out to be! There are some rather uncomfortable moments due to the mature subject matter, but on the whole, the film provides plenty of laughs. The characters are convincing and engaging, albeit a tad over-the-top at times. This is a movie worth watching multiple times to fully appreciate all the subtle nuances in the visuals and dialogue. The actors deliver strong performances across the board, even in the smaller roles.

The sets and period costumes are gorgeous. Martin Léon's music is lovely, and France Castel gives a wonderful performance. Juliette Gosselin shows the potential to be a fantastic actress, and the rest of the cast is excellent as well. The storyline involves many fantasies playing out, some of which really startled me! It creates a very unique and imaginative world.
