In July 1914, a luxury cruise ship departs from Italy carrying the ashes of the renowned opera singer Edmea Tetua. Aboard are her close friends, fellow opera singers, actors, and an array of eccentric individuals, all basking in the opulence of the early days at sea. The atmosphere shifts on the third day when the captain is compelled to rescue a significant group of Serbian refugees from the water, individuals fleeing the initial upheavals of World War I. Their presence on the ship introduces a stark contrast to the initial revelry, as the realities of the unfolding global conflict begin to intrude upon the isolated world of the passengers.
