Dongji Rescue

During World War II, in 1942, a tragic event unfolds near the Zhoushan Islands when the Japanese cargo ship "Lisbon Maru," transporting over 1,800 British prisoners of war, is torpedoed by an American submarine. Amidst the chaos, local Dongki fishermen display extraordinary courage by risking their lives to save approximately 300 British servicemen from the sinking vessel. As a massive Japanese search operation ensues, these fishermen further demonstrate their bravery by sheltering and aiding three British survivors. This poignant chapter of history, marked by both loss and humanity, is remembered as the Lisbon Maru shipwreck.
