Diary of a Chambermaid

Diary of a Chambermaid follows the strategic maneuvering of Celestine (Jeanne Moreau), a maid hired in the 1930s at a Normandy estate run by Monsieur Rabour (Jean Ozenne), his daughter (Francoise Lugagne), and her husband, Monsieur Montiel (Michel Piccoli). Celestine soon discovers M. Rabour's harmless boot fetish, the daughter's chilly disinterest in her husband, and Montiel's inappropriate attraction to the staff. The gamekeeper, Joseph (Georges Geret), a fascist, reports all lower-house activities, while the neighboring veteran (Daniel Ivernel), who dislikes Monteil, shares his bed with his housekeeper. Celestine carefully navigates this volatile situation, rejecting the men's advances until it suits her.
