The Emperor's Nightingale opens with a live-action prologue set in the playroom of a lonely young boy; the room and its contents are then transformed into the setting for an animated version of Andersen's tale, about a Chinese emperor who is so constrained by rules, customs and the constant attentions of his sycophantic courtiers that he is finally unable to discern between the beautiful song of his beloved nightingale and the robotic squawkings of the bird's mechanical double.
