Christ in Concrete

Geremio, a young Italian immigrant in New York City, works as a bricklayer while courting Annunziata through letters, falsely claiming he owns a home. After marrying, he rents a place for their brief honeymoon. Years later, trapped in a slum tenement with three children, the 1929 depression deepens their struggles. Desperate to provide, Geremio exploits his comrades in hazardous construction, leading to his best friend's accidental death. Overwhelmed by grief, he becomes unfaithful to Annunziata, as their lives reflect a harsh, aimless existence where true worth remains elusive.
