When amateur boxer Charley Davis (John Garfield) wins his first big match, he attracts the interest of small-time promoter Quinn (William Conrad). After his father's sudden death, Davis throws himself into his new career despite protests from his mother (Anne Revere). A natural, Davis quickly finds success which forces him to make some difficult choices. Canada Lee shines as the boxing champ that Davis defeats, and then later becomes his only friend.
