The film is a true-life drama about Robert Stroud, who, during his 53-year imprisonment, became a renowned expert in ornithology. Stroud, convicted of murder twice and sentenced to life in solitary confinement for killing a prison guard, discovers a new purpose when he nurses a sick sparrow back to health in his cell. This experience ignites his passion for studying birds, leading him to educate himself extensively and achieve recognition as a world authority on avian science, all from within the confines of his prison cell.
