Taillandier is a well-known painter in his sixties, but despite his success, he suddenly decides to give up his art. Overwhelmed by depression, he walks away from his home with no destination in mind, and leaving no explanation for those close to him. During his travels, he has an unlikely encounter with a young girl who has also strayed from the path of life -- Marylou, rejected by her own mother. This lost child and this man at the end of his tether travel together for a while. And eventually, they end up living like father and daughter in the peace and quiet of a rented house, giving each other the helping hand they both need to make sense of their lives once more.
