1971 Drama
1h 36min
In 1929, a Bolshevik Uzbek officer married to the young woman who nursed him back to health assumes responsibility for a local village. Urged by comrades in Tashkent to have the women drop their chadors and veils without force, his wife refuses, prompting a 14-year-old girl to step forward and set the example over the objections of the local Muslim clergy and most of the village men. After the girl is killed and he is shot, his wife nurses him to health in the hills once more and begs him to leave, but when he returns her father pressures her to continue wearing the veil.
