Franz Biberkopf re-enters a life of freedom after being convicted of his girlfriend's manslaughter. Determined to start a new life for himself, Franz overlooks the fact that it's hard to make a decent living in 1920s Berlin and is soon drawn to a psychotic crook and into a criminal underbelly he cannot escape.
