Sarah works as a counsellor in a centre which offers internships to young drop-outs as way of helping them into the job market. When she realizes that too many of the participants are dropping out of the internship program itself, Sarah tries something new. She convinces the centre to ask a filmmaker, Margot, to conduct a workshop for the youths. Margot's latest film, which Sarah had seen, dealt with suicide among the young. The youths in Sarah's program seem to have only one certainty in their lives: that mankind is a failure. The only way to avoid participating in this failure, therefore, is to "opt out." And the only way to make life bearable is to stick together. À part des autres takes us deep into the world of those who have chosen to marginalize themselves.
