Clint Keyes (James Garner) is a man on the run. Fleeing from the cavalry, where he faces hanging for charges of mutiny and desertion, he frantically tries to disappear into the desert landscape. His unlikely companions? "Rosie," an uncooperative camel, his little one, and a 10-year-old runaway boy (Clay O'Brien). Things get complicated when they encounter a widowed pioneer (Vera Miles) and her young daughter (Jodie Foster), who must make a choice between helping the strange group of fugitives or hindering their relentless escape.
