Trente ans après avoir servi ensemble lors de la guerre du Vietnam, Larry "Doc" Shepherd, Sal Nealon et le révérend Richard Mueller se retrouvent pour une mission différente : enterrer le fils de Doc, un jeune Marine tué en Irak. Renonçant à l'inhumation au cimetière national d'Arlington, Doc et ses vieux amis emmènent le cercueil lors d'un voyage aigre-doux le long de la côte jusqu'au New Hampshire. En chemin, les trois hommes se remémorent et arrivent à accepter les souvenirs partagés d'une guerre qui continue de façonner leur vie.
