En 1922, le compositeur novice Kenneth Harvey arrive à New York depuis le Kansas, espérant publier son concerto ; il rencontre Danny O'Mara, propriétaire d'un speakeasy, qui espère monter une comédie musicale à Broadway. Les affaires de Ken prennent un tournant pour le mieux lorsqu'il tombe amoureux de la chanteuse Bonnie Watson. Mais pendant qu'il travaille sur l'orchestration, O'Mara adapte secrètement ses mélodies pour les "Greenwich Village Gaieties".
