C'est l'histoire d'un aventurier rebelle, ALVAREZ KELLY (William Holden), who finds himself in the midst of the Civil War. With no loyalty to the North or the South, Kelly is hired to drive a herd of cattle from Mexico to the Union Army in Virginia. He is captured along the way by Colonel Tom Rossiter (Richard Widmark) of the Confederate Army who persuades him... by blowing off one of his fingers, to deliver the cattle to the starving Confederates in Richmond. At a bridge leading to Richmond, the Union Army attacks and a bloody battle ensues in which Kelly risks his life to save a Confederate officer. Kelly's fate ultimately ends up back in the hands of Colonel Rossiter.
