SEEING- MY- FIRST- SPAGHETTI-WESTERN- IN- 2024

The Spaghetti-Western genre reigned supremely from roughly 1966 to 1978 and one of the movements monumental directors was Mr. Sergio Leone who offers in " O U A T I T W " an intriguing western but one that is much too long, one that eventually wears out the viewer. The western is notable, first of all, as Henry Fonda plays the villain for the first time in his career, a sadist of a man hired by a railway financier to murder a man for property need by Railways of the time. There is a second plot closely associated with the first as stars Jason Robards & Charles Bronson, though dubious in character set out to protect the families of those affected.

The film has some exceptional elements starting with a visually stunning production, a good screenplay in that it tries to be less verbose than Hollywood Westerns, a whip-smart score by the most iconic spaghetti-western composer, Ennio Morricone and some good lead performances. On the negative side, the film is probably more full of western clichés than ever seen in one single movie. I'm not a particular western fan and most definitely not a Italian-Spaghetti Western aficionado so I was not thrilled with this caper as others have been through the years. " O U A T I T W " has some good elements but just as many poor elements, the one being the extreme length I've already mentioned. I didn't buy Fonda's "bad guy" persona totally because of his usually laconic acting style, but I suppose he enjoyed playing against type for once. The film also stars Claudia Cardinale who, at the time, was a an absolute raving beauty, but I wasn't totally convinced of her acting talent though she does not give what I would call a bad performance. She became a bit of a Hollywood sensation for a time as other Italian beauties but none were able to overcome the enormous love and success of Gina Lollobrigida or Sophia Loren.

The film had other good points like splendid cinematography, good direction and an unrivaled final duel between Fonda and Bronson but with these extra positives, the films stutters along at times with almost dead pauses that should have been edited out of the film allowing for a more acceptable running time. The slow, almost long-time pauses that contribute nothing to the film were a real hindrance and it took me 3 sittings to view the almost three hour western. Though subjectively. I didn't love this western, on an objective note, I can see how many of the time fell in love with this brief but thrilling genre. I will repeat that if the film had been condensed to two hours and some minutes, it would have fared a lot better with many people back in the day & those experiencing the spaghetti-western in the 21st century.

Interesting that after 1978, though we get some far-out westerns, the spaghetti-western never regained its once immense popularity.

Another epic Western by Sergio Leone!

Possibly the greatest Western soundtrack of all time!

The acting is solid, with the looks saying it all: Henry Fonda, Claudia Cardinale, Charles Bronson, Jason Robards, and the rest of the cast.

The film boasts stunning landscapes that deserved to be seen on the big screen!

Though a bit long for my taste, it's always a treat to revisit this classic!

The greatest western in my book. Everything was damn near perfect with this movie. Bronson and Fonda finale is unrivaled in movie duels. All respect to the old wayne movies or c. eastwood they dont come close to this quality!

This is Sergio Leone's crowning achievement in film. His signature style is on full display in this western, featuring larger-than-life men in hats. The strong cast includes Claudia Cardinale (Jill), Charles Bronson (Harmonica), Jason Robarts (Cheyenne), and Henry Fonda (Frank) in the starring roles. Not to be overlooked is Ennio Morricone's haunting score that defines these spaghetti westerns. It's a grand production with dusty landscapes and plenty of duels. The story depicts the arrival of progress and unchecked capitalism in the Wild West. Even though it was made over 50 years ago in 1968, it remains a pleasure to rewatch on the small screen at home. Welcome to 19th century Flagstone and the Sweetwater ranch.

I'm planning to rent this masterpiece for my sons. However, I fear I may be disappointed, just like I was with my rental of "Once Upon a Time the Revolution" (also known as "Duck You Sucker"). Leone's signature style (slow pacing, extreme close-ups of faces, etc.), which was innovative for its time, doesn't quite hold up in the fast-paced 2000s. Even I find myself craving a bit more rhythm these days!!! I have a feeling I might be slightly let down. That said, the magnificent music remains timeless!

    cgirard@  29.1.2018 age: 50+ 244 reviews

Sergio Leone, successful director of the Clint Eastwood spaghetti westerns, chose the real American west for the setting of his next cowboy story. He packed up his favourite composer, Ennio Morriconi along with a beautiful Italian star, Claudio Cardinale, to play his feminine lead. He also coerced three Hollywood A-Listers to play the good, bad and sorta ugly cowboys. As 'cowboys' is a euphemism for 'gunmen' in this film, the viewer must be prepared for much accompanying noise as the hombres practice what they do best.

Other than bank robberies and Indian raids, almost every western cliche is dropped into the film; miners, mules, stagecoaches, the railroad, double-crosses, chewin' tobacco, a lady hostel proprietor, Arizona landscapes, the big showdown, revenge and eventually justice.

Leone is already accomplished in presenting attractive visual portraits and Morriconi has few peers in the creation of beautiful music. The tour de force performance though, and the one that lifted the film from just another western to a classic was presented by one of Hollywood's masters, Henry Fonda. Although Mr. Fonda's face was quite recognizable, his bearing and actions were surprisingly different from what I would have expected. Kudos to him!

My quibbles here in no way detract from the overall quality of this oater. Initially there were a number of pregnant pauses, too many and too long in duration for my taste. I also wondered about the two minute face-off as the opponents jockeyed for position in the ultimate showdown. It must have taken 12 hours to film, according to the changing position of the sun's shadows at the outset and conclusion of the final draw.

An outstanding movie. The cast delivers exceptional performances, with the pacing being both deliberate and masterfully executed. The story is engaging, building up to a jaw-dropping conclusion where the revelation of Harmonica's motive is nothing short of extraordinary. This film is an absolute must-see, with no shortcomings whatsoever.

This film is truly impressive and masterfully made. It's a classic of the genre that has been imitated many times but never matched. The visuals are packed with meaning, emotion, and feature incredibly authentic cowboys. The cinematography is a rare achievement. The musical score is enchanting, immersive and electrifying. This is a movie to watch, rewatch, and discover anew.

Leone/Morricone super work. Fonda as bad as they come. One of the best movies ever made. Few people know that this was the first time time Leone could effort to hire Fonda who was his preferred actor for all his previous western series.

What an incredible film! The cinematography is stunning, with slow pacing that allows the visuals to shine. The acting is thoroughly convincing. And Ennio Morricone's score (which I highly recommend - in my opinion, it's the best film soundtrack after Blade Runner's) is phenomenal. This is a cinematic masterpiece the likes of which are sadly no longer made.

If you're accustomed to American westerns that run exactly 90 minutes, this film might feel slow and drawn out. However, it's a classic that everyone should watch. The movie takes its time establishing the scenery, much like in ) Give it a watch if you haven't already, but keep in mind that it's a 165-minute film.

How can anyone disparage THE greatest classic western of all time? Sergio Leone has crafted a masterful work that has left an indelible mark on the history of cinema... His direction is impeccable, flawless, and borders on perfection. And what about the enchanting and memorable music? It gives "Once Upon a Time in the West" a truly unique atmosphere. What makes this film remarkable is how Leone managed to make an extremely sparse script captivating through slow, action-less scenes that somehow propel the story forward. The actors' emotions and actions alone render the dialogues unnecessary. In my opinion, Leone could have made a silent "Once Upon a Time..." without sacrificing any of its charm. Don't expect a typical American western full of gratuitous gunfights and corny dialogues. This is a deliciously savory spaghetti western! However, if you tend to have a closed mind, don't even think about watching "Once Upon..." - you won't last more than an hour.

I'm not sure I can add anything new to what's already been said about this film. It's truly excellent - while not as thrilling as The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, it's beautifully shot and has a flawless soundtrack. The long stretches of silence are fantastic and, for me, far surpass the dialogue. Whenever the actors start speaking, the film loses some of its magic. This is because the characters' emotions and thoughts are conveyed perfectly through their expressions, a brilliant technique that's sadly missing from many modern films. The ending felt a tad awkward compared to the rest of the film, but that's just me being picky. Regardless, this film is a must-see, if only for its phenomenal opening scene.

I generally enjoy Westerns, but this one... wow, the director could have easily cut the film in half and ended up with something more interesting. Despite the praise from earlier reviews, I find myself completely unimpressed by this movie. It has far too many drawn-out scenes that contribute nothing to the overall story. Truthfully, after watching for just an hour and 15 minutes, I'd had enough, even though I usually try to give films the benefit of the doubt until the very end.

An absolutely stunning film. Bronson only became the Bronson we know thanks to this movie. Claudia Cardinale has never looked more beautiful. Robards is an underappreciated talent. And what can be said about Fonda's against-type casting except that he's terrifying and steals every scene he's in. Each actor has their own musical theme in this unmatched opera of a movie. The new DVD release restores this film's rightful place as a classic - a truly beautiful edition that is an essential, must-have purchase.

The key ingredients for a successful film are the cast, the music, and the direction. In this case, everything is top-notch, resulting in one of the best westerns ever made. Take your time to fully immerse yourself in Leone's vision of the West and savor every moment. While there aren't an overwhelming number of action scenes, pay close attention to the actors' expressions and the unspoken tensions - Leone doesn't need to spell everything out for the audience.

Following Sergio Leone's Man With No Name trilogy, this film beautifully wraps up the master of Italian cinema's foray into spaghetti westerns. Although Clint Eastwood doesn't star in this one, the movie still has an indescribable poetry and magnificence to it. A true classic of the genre, any western fan should absolutely not miss this film. Many have tried to imitate or improve upon the genre, but Once Upon A Time In The West and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly remain unsurpassed - they're simply the best of the best.

I fell in love with this movie the moment I first saw it. The music sent chills down my spine every single time. If you're not familiar with Leone, you should know that his films tend to be slow and lengthy, which is definitely the case here. It's a love-it-or-hate-it kind of film, but if you do love it, the enjoyment lasts and lasts... I was thrilled when Parc cinema showed it (even though the print was a bit damaged), because I'd never seen it in widescreen before (it's not available in widescreen on either VHS or DVD), and believe me, this movie HAS to be seen in its original format to truly appreciate it. Leone was at the top of his game in this era, and keen-eyed cinephiles will notice his camera work. No one but Leone could achieve that kind of depth of field (Deep Focus), and he always made the most of the wide format (Techniscope 2.35:1) in his framing. He manages to bring out his characters without having them say a word, just by shooting them in close-up (his trademark). Once Upon A Time In The West is a cinematic masterpiece and one of my all-time favorite films. Every film student should watch this to understand that there's more to westerns and cinema in general than just Hollywood. It's a vision where things aren't stupidly rushed, where not everything has to be spelled out, where the line between good and evil is blurred, and where the visual style is part of the storytelling. I haven't even mentioned the music, the performances (Cardinale steals the show and has never looked more stunning), the finale (one of the best duels ever put on film), the dialogues, the touches of humor, or the staging. But be warned: it's a very long, slow film. If you're stressed out or an Armageddon fan, steer clear.

The best western ever made. Sadly, Leone is no longer with us as he was the only one capable of creating movies of this caliber. Eastwood gave it a shot but lacks Leone's talent and ability to collaborate with the right people (like Morricone). This is also the only Leone film sold in Quebec that's available in French.
