Overall, I found the film nice and colorful despite a slightly shaky plot or direction...
The actors are all very good and intense. The Flemish mother is particularly 'annoying' and 'spitfire' to the extreme! The music is quite original (retro?) without being too intrusive. The direction maintains a good pace and tension without revealing the story's secrets too quickly. The alternation of vertical (past) and horizontal (present) shots is useful and interesting although a bit artificial.
With its accumulation of flashbacks, characters at different ages and life stages, the film ends up getting bogged down in confusion towards the end! The plot loses us in its twists and turns: Oedipal traumas, the mother's depression... and perhaps the son's: we only know that he is losing his rent, seized by bailiffs! It's hard to distinguish between Jean's father and the maternal grandfather (?), etc.
Then, Jean has a hidden key/card to enter his mother's place? A Freudian joke? He is about to be seized but has the means to go to Belgium! How does he know the value of the mirror, aside from a vague rumor?
The crucial (?) scene where young Jean catches his mother in bed lost me! Is she with the aging Jean's father (but his mother is still young) or is she with her father or a second husband/lover?
The character of the little girl and/or mother in her youth also seemed unnecessary and confusing... unless they wanted to suggest a mental disorder in Jean too!? Too bad!
It's a good story that keeps us engaged until the end. There are some elements that are not very clear, but it doesn't prevent one from appreciating the work.
I had a very vague idea about the story and had refused to read any reviews beforehand. I don't particularly enjoy most popular Quebec films in general, so I'm not sold on the genre. However, this one surprised, intrigued, shocked, amused, saddened, and relieved me as the story unfolded. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the actors' performances in uncomfortable situations; intrigued by the choices of cinematographic effects; shocked by the attitude of certain characters; amused by certain musical choices and situations I recognized myself in; saddened because the subject touches sensitive chords. A film to be seen on the big screen for a better immersion!
This film offers an intense emotional experience. Although the film left me a bit perplexed at first, at a certain point, the pieces of the puzzle start to fit together, adding a nice touch to the story. I like the daring use of vertical shots through the mirror. This film was made with a very small budget, so unfortunately, it is noticeable at some points, but it's not enough to take away from the story. This is not a Hollywood film, and it doesn't pretend to be. It's always nice to see the cultural richness of Quebec through cinema. It's a human and unsettling film that is worth watching. However, I would have liked subtitles when the dialogue is in other languages. I understand that it was done to put us in the shoes of the main character who does not understand, but having several sentences in an unknown language can easily distract the listener for a few seconds. In summary: this film is worth watching, and I recommend it to those who enjoy dramas, as this film has the ability to "get under your skin" and make you experience emotions to the fullest.
Just WOW. It's done! Seen! WoW, moving... The art of evoking a range of emotions! At times we laugh, at others we are moved, we are enraged, we piece things together and life goes on... Go watch it!
Just saw it. I had no idea what to expect, but I did not expect something that would hit me this hard. We love it when stories grab us, that is an 11/10. When you start to understand from the middle of the film and the puzzle pieces come together, it's a crescendo of emotion and empathy that follows. The art direction is superb! Just a big Bravo!
