This Maltese-Canadian production from veteran director VALERIE BUHAGIAN, had a brilliant screening at TIFF 2021 (I did not see the film in a theatre but as a stream from the festival). The wildly unpredictable narrative all takes place in a quite small Meditarranean, sun drenched village in Malta in the 1980's. The film has a very traditional. Very distinct patriarchal system that must be obeyed, but after years of caring for a brother who's a priest, our heroine begins to see the world and herself in a new light, all brought about by romance when she has well passed the flower of her youth.

As our aging heroine, NATASCHA MCELHONE easily gives a career best performance as she finds and explores her new life. She is radiant in the role.

The film is not the traditional CARMEN OPERA story by any stretch of the imagination but it does use some of the work's more famous arias as part of the musical texture of the film, NICHOLAS BRITELL composing a new score and new songs that seem to fit well in this dreamy world of Malta.

The story takes on some unexpected and rather bizarre turns that most definitely incriminate the church. Through a set of odd circumstances, our protagonist finds herself performing a function exclusively meant for men of the priesthood, all to the delight of the parishioners but the horror of the authorities.
I found this extra bit to the feature rather an "add-on", one that I didn't much care for or fully understand.

It's because of these strange turns in the feature that I'm not rating the film as highly as I would want. I simply didn't see the need for them.

One thing is certain. You will definitely want to visit beautiful
    MALTA after viewing this film.
